About the Role

Richmond Public Schools is exploring interest and availability among licensed Athletic Trainers in the greater Richmond area to support student-athlete health, safety, injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation across our high school and middle school athletic programs. This posting is intended to gauge candidate interest and availability ahead of an upcoming procurement/staffing decision.

RPS currently supports interscholastic athletics at 5 Comprehensive High Schools, 3 College Preparatory Alternative High Schools, and 8 Middle Schools, offering sports including football, cross country, volleyball, basketball, track and field, softball, baseball, wrestling, tennis, golf, soccer, forensics, and cheerleading.

Schedule

  • August – June: Average of 25+ hours per week

  • July (out-of-season practices/activities): Fewer than 25 hours per week

  • High school assignments are typically dedicated to a single Comprehensive High School; middle school coverage follows a rotating model across the 8 middle school programs

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare athletes for practice and competition, including taping, bandaging, and bracing

  • Evaluate injuries to determine appropriate treatment, management, and/or medical referral

  • Implement treatment plans and sport-specific rehabilitation programs

  • Support Virginia High School League (VHSL) activities, athletic club activities, and middle school athletics

  • Maintain complete and accurate medical records for all athletes and associated injuries

  • Communicate with coaches, student-athletes, and (for athletes under 18) parents/guardians regarding injuries, rehab plans, and referrals to physicians or physical therapy

  • Coordinate with athletes, athletic directors, coaches, physicians, and other healthcare professionals on individualized care plans

  • Provide first aid and emergency assistance as needed

  • Assist the school athletic administrator with implementing Emergency Medical Action Plans for VHSL-sponsored activities

  • Coordinate and provide pre-participation physical examinations at least twice per year

  • Conduct and implement the VHSL Weight Control Program for wrestling

  • Provide education to athletes, coaches, parents, and administrators on injury prevention

Required Qualifications

  • Current, unrestricted license to practice Athletic Training in the Commonwealth of Virginia (Virginia Department of Health Professions Board of Medicine)

  • Board Certification (ATC) through the Board of Certification (BOC) for the Athletic Trainer

  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in a high school or collegiate athletic setting

  • Familiarity with VHSL regulations and youth-specific injury patterns

  • Current CPR/First Aid certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing athletic training coverage across multiple sites/schools simultaneously

  • Experience with concussion management (Return-to-Learn/Return-to-Play protocols)

  • Prior work in K–12, urban, or underserved school communities

  • Specialized training in heat illness prevention and cardiac arrest response

Additional Requirements

  • Successful completion of background check, including certification regarding no convictions for barrier crimes, sexual offenses involving a minor, or crimes of moral turpitude (Code of Virginia §19.2-392.02.A)

  • Compliance with FERPA and HIPAA confidentiality standards for student medical/educational records
